whisky

How is whisky made?

Whisky is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. Various grains are used for different varieties for whisky, including barley, corn, rye, and wheat. Whisky must be aged for more than three years in oak casks. At Aberfeldy each one of our whiskies is aged to perfection and proudly carries an age statement on the bottle.

WHAT IS SCOTCH WHISKY?

For a whisky to be officially classed as Scotch it must be produced in Scotland, made from just three ingredients, water, malted barley and yeast, and matured in oak casks for a minimum of three years.

WHY DO YOU DRINK WHISKY AND WATER?

Adding a couple of drops of water to your glass of whisky, which slightly lowers the alcoholic strength, can help ‘open up’ the aromas and flavours. The amount to add is a personal choice.

DOES WHISKY GO OFF?

Once a bottle of whisky is opened and exposed to oxygen, it will gradually change over time. The alcohol content can drop and some whiskies can lose their intensity the longer they’re open. Remember to keep an opened bottle in an upright position, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
